All Things Bright and Beautiful

13 June 2011

In anticipation of Owl City’s newest album coming out tomorrow, I’ve been listening to all of the music I have of Adam Young’s projects. That includes his three Owl City albums, a Sky Sailing album, a few Swimming with Dolphins songs, other Owl City songs that weren’t on the albums or were in limited edition copies, and two songs from his latest album, All Things Bright and Beautiful. And I’ve been reminded again why I love him so much! And his recent blog post put a smile on my face.

"Sometimes I’m asked why the music I create tends to sound like it does — why the optimistic flavor? Is that because you’re an excessively happy person? Do you ever have bad days? It’s an innocent question and I enjoy answering it because music has always been my way of “dealing with life” by way of escapism. Rather than create art that mirrors the inevitable dark days I’m plagued with just like everyone, I prefer to let my daydreams carry me away into places where one can go anywhere, do anything, be anyone, in a way that only the mind can allow. And rather than express whatever angst and malaise that gets dealt my way by writing profane songs littered with curse words or crude allegories or sexual vulgarities, I’d rather spend my time imagining how immensely BEAUTIFUL this life has the perfect potential of being."

Here are some words of wisdom from Mr Young (well technically some lyrics are from Swimming with Dolphins and I'm not sure who wrote those songs...):
  • Remember to live ‘cause you’re gonna be thrilled to death
  • Release you high hopes and they’ll survive, ‘cause this is the future and you are alive
  • Exhale the stress so you don’t come unglued
  • Dear God, you’re the only North Star I would follow this far
  • Oh telescope, keep an eye on my only hope
  • If the bombs go off, the sun will still be shining, ‘cause I’ve heard it said that every mushroom cloud has a silver lining
  • Tie my handlebars to the stars so I stay on track
  • So many sights to see, so wake up like an early-birdie and get a head start on the day
  • We hope that tomorrow brings us our butterfly wings
  • Depression please cut to the chase and cut a long story short, oh please be done, how much longer can this drama afford to run
  • If you were a beautiful sound in the echoes all around then I’d be your harmony
  • If I were a raindrop would you be my thunderstorm
  • The silence isn’t so bad, till I look at my hands and feel sad, cause the spaces between my fingers are right where yours fit perfectly
  • It’s so cold so surround me with rainclouds to keep me warm
  • I feel like I’m falling, so darling don’t let me go, the thought is appalling, but should I slip away into the storm sea will you remember me
  • Reality is a wonderful place but I wouldn’t want to live there
  • With friends like these, well who needs enemies
  • You’re the bird and I’m the worm and we were meant to be
  • It’s beautiful when time is ours and everything’s a miracle
  • Because I’ve got the brightest star you’ll ever find, even the sun is jealous of the way you shine
  • All my life, I wish I broke mirrors, instead of promises, cause all I see is the shattered conscience, staring right back at me
  • As love sweeps over the room cause we tend to make each other blush
  • Is that the light at the far end of the tunnel or just the train
  • The frozen days we set ablaze...
  • If we could sit together for a moment and talk forever just to pass the time
  • Are you there? Or are you just a decoy dream in my head
  • We were happy like the shades of may, when we got carried away
  • I regarded the world as such a sad sight, until I viewed it in black and white
  • Excuse the pun but it’s hair today and gone tomorrow
  • Thank the Lord I’m not going bald, and if I may quip, my curls and I are just like heaven cause rest assure there’ll be no parting there
  • I wish we could sail all our sad days away
  • She was 21, wishing she lived by the sun, the sand and the sea, So I suggested she’d move out fast and not be the last, To leave and be free
  • I’ll keep my helmet on just in case my head caves in because of my thoughts collapes or my framework snaps it’ll make a mess like you wouldn’t believe
  • Or if my intentions stray, I’ll wrench them away then I'll take my leave and I won’t even look back
  • Dreams don’t turn to dust (this song gives me butterflies, is that weird? lol)

Okay, perhaps this list is getting too long. I’ll stop now. But before I go, I have some swoon-worthy more stuff for you.

Taylor Swift wrote a song for Adam, called Enchanted. And he did a cover of the song and replied with a message to her on Valentine’s day:

"Dearest Taylor,
I'll be the first to admit I'm a rather shy boy and since music is the most eloquent form of communication I can muster, I decided to record something for you--a sort of a 'reply' to the breathtaking song on your current record. This is what I wanted so badly to tell you in person but could never quite put into words:

Everything about you is lovely. You're an immensely charming girl with a beautiful heart and more grace and elegance than I know how to describe. You are a true princess from a dreamy fairy tale, and above all, I just want you to know...I was enchanted to meet you too.
Love, Adam."

Adam, you turn me into a hopeless romantic! <3

I'm so darn excited for this album! It's the most anticipated thing for me this year... above Lady Gaga, E3... maybe not above the 3DS but to be fair I can't do much with my 3DS at the moment, so Owl City is more exciting.

The 20th of June can't come quick enough for me!!!

I've gone all fangirl-mode and not even realised. Apologies! <3

That is all for now :)
